Activision Blizzard has stated during its quarterly earnings call that the company expects an Overwatch 2 release date of 2022. Diablo IV is also not expected to have a 2021 release. This comes weeks after an alleged rumour that development of Overwatch 2 progressing really slowly and that it would be delayed. However, since the Overwatch 2 release date was never initially revealed, it’s arguable whether it was really delayed or not.
This comes as a disappointment to many Overwatch fans as there has been radio silence about the sequel for quite a long time. However, fans can be hopeful for new information as Overwatch 2 is expected to make an appearance on this year’s BlizzConline, a virtual only event replacing BlizzCon 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a recent interview with Gaku Space, Overwatch voice actor who plays Genji, he stated that he hasn’t been called in by Blizzard yet to do any work regarding Overwatch 2, suggesting that the game is still quite a ways off.
Overwatch is still getting regular patch notes and updates, though nothing significant like a heroes or PvP map. That’s, of course, not including Kanezaka, a new deathmatch map that was released mid-January.
The news of both games being at least a year off can be frustrating, especially considering that being released during a pandemic would have been the perfect time, but it’s also worth noting that the pandemic itself likely contributed to the slow progress made. Hopefully when both games are released, the wait will be worth it.
