It’s time to get fed, Mercy fans! Overwatch has invited everyone to “confront the past” with their latest bit of lore about everyone’s favorite Swiss Guardian Angel, Mercy. Written by Michael Chu, Senior Designer for Overwatch’s lore, the short story “Valkyrie” is presented with several beautiful illustrations by Nesskain.

Mercy? Who’s that?
Not sure who Mercy is and why you should care? Dr. Angela Ziegler, Mercy’s real name, is a pioneer in biomedical science. She became Head of Surgery at a Swiss hospital before developing new technology in the field of applied nanobiology. She is quite literally an angel, by any account. In terms of Overwatch’s gameplay, Mercy is one of the game’s easier Support heroes and can provide healing and a damage boost to teammates. You can find more details on her abilities here.
What’s the short story about?
Valkyrie begins as a first-person account of Dr. Ziegler’s time in Cairo, Egypt, however, it dips in and out of flashbacks throughout. Much like any bit of Overwatch lore, Valkyrie doesn’t want you to forget it has more than just one character. Dr. Ziegler brushes shoulders with several other members of the Overwatch roster, including Ana Amari and Jack Morrison. There are also references throughout to characters such as Winston, Tracer, Reaper, and Brigitte. As you read the short, you learn more about the tenuous relationship between the three characters post-Overwatch. The short story is a testament to Dr. Ziegler’s compassion and strength. It’s a fantastic addition to the Overwatch lore.
Hints at a new skin?
At the end of the short story, an image appears of what looks like a new Mercy skin. There’s no confirmation that this skin is indeed out, but it would be foolish to rule out the possibility that it will become available soon.
EDIT: THE SKIN IS OUT! You just need the usual nine wins in any mode!
