After the huge success of the Resident Evil 2 & 3 Remakes, sources have indicated that development is in full swing for a Resident Evil 4 Remake set for release in 2022.
It is being reported that development is being done by M-Two, a new Capcom-backed studio founded by former PlatinumGames head Tatsuya Minami. Tatsuya Minami is also named in the credits of Resident Evil 3 as the Executive Producer on behalf of M-Two.
Minami was a former Capcom employee, having worked on games such as Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Ghouls & Goblins, as well as games in the Devil May Cry, Mega Man and Resident Evil series. Other employees of M-Two are listed in the Resident Evil 3 credits, such as designer Tsutomu Teranishi, giving weight to this rumor. It is said that Shinji Mikami declined to head the production of the Resident Evil 4 Remake but has given advice on the direction of the game.
If this rumor turns out to be true, it will delight many fans. Resident Evil 4 is one of the most successful games in the franchise and brought a new generation of players to the series for the first time. Resident Evil 4 went on to sell over 7.5 million copies and scored a 96/100 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest scored games of all time.
Since its initial release on the Gamecube in 2005, it has since been ported to the PS2, Wii, iOS, Android, Zeebo, PC, Xbox 360 & PS3, Xbox One & PS4 and, most recently, the Nintendo Switch, meaning it has been ported to virtually every platform that has released since the game launched.
Resident Evil 4 set a new standard when it came to 3rd person action games and popularized mechanics which became standard in gaming for many years, such as QTE (Quick Time Events).
With the recent success of RE 2 & 3 it makes sense that Capcom will continue releasing remakes, retelling the story in a modern era, although personally I don’t think RE 4-6 need remakes, and perhaps Code Veronica should have received a remake instead.
As of right now, a Resident Evil 4 Remake is just rumor and innuendo and will remain as such until Capcom officially confirms it.
