Schalke 04 is well known for having their football team as a major partaker in the Bundesliga in the past few years. However, upon their relegation from Germany’s biggest league, the team has been struggling financially. As a result, and with the COVID-19 pandemic, it was just too much to sustain.
The newest addition to their team in the top lane, BrokenBlade, boosted their run in the spring split. After their miracle run leading them to make play-offs, challenging G2 in Round 1, and beating FNATIC in the lower brackets. The summer split is not going as the team would like, and they will be selling their spot as has been speculated before.
In an emotional goodbye message, the team confirmed that team BDS will take their spot. Therefore, the LEC will be seeing a fresh new roster with fresh faces. Team BDS have a lot to prove in front of the best League of Legends teams in Europe, and the world. After that, the competition is fierce, and the hurdles will not be few.
On the other hand, there’s a lot of uncertainty regarding the future of esports for Team Schalke 04. And as a football team originally, they might want to narrow their interest into football mainly. Completing the deal, and selling their spot for a fee of €26.5 million, consequently this to be the 5th most expensive deal the club has made. The 4th being their sale of world-class goalkeeper Manual Neuer, for €30 million.
Saying goodbye to Schalke 04
We would like to thank team Schalke 04 for their investment in the LEC. They have given all the LEC fans moments to look back to and feel nostalgic. They helped the LEC be part of where it is now. It would not be the same if it wasn’t for them. Next, we hope that Team BDS prove to be a pivotal part of the LEC too.
Our most sincere thank you to the team, and we wish them the best for their future endeavours.
