SEGA Game Gear Micro Coming, Celebrating 60th Anniversary

Published:

SEGA Game Gear Micro will be coming out to celebrate SEGA’s 60th anniversary. It will include four titles and come in four colours.

What Is A SEGA Game Gear Micro?

Like me, you might not know a lot about the console. It isn’t a Dreamcast, the console a lot of people would associate with SEGA, or even a Saturn. However, what it IS is a pretty important step in the developing handheld console market.

Originally, it came out a few years after the Nintendo Game Boy. As we all know, Nintendo has dominated the market and hasn’t exactly stopped. However, the SEGA Game Gear made itself known for its affordability and backlit display. Although the Atari Lynx may have also had a backlit colour display, it was almost twice as much as the SEGA Game Gear. Similarly, the TurboExpress was even more expensive than that.

It may not have had the largest library, or the licensing for Nintendo franchises, but for many it was the first time they held the highest quality, computer game graphics in their hands. The Game Boy was good and had good games, but it was monochromatic and wasn’t backlit. The SEGA Game Gear made these things affordable to many and was released almost a decade before the Game Boy Colour.

The SEGA Game Gear Micro is, as the name suggests, a smaller version of the original SEGA Game Gear. It reportedly comes with Last Bible, Shining Force, Sonic & Tails and Gunstar Heroes.

As seen in the image below, the SEGA Game Gear Micro will cost roughly $45. However, we only have information about a Japanese release at the moment.

Speaking of retro gaming, did you know that a Switch Cartridge could hold the entire NES to GBA Library of games twice over? Find out more here!
