The last fighter for the Super Smash Bros. DLC has been revealed and it is none other than Sora from Kingdom Hearts. The news comes directly from the final Sakurai Presents, where Ultimate director, Masahiro Sakurai, showcased the character.
6 years ago, a Smash Bros fighter ballot was held to allow fans to request characters for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Ultimately, Bayonetta ended up being the #1 choice in Europe and the top 5 in North America.
Among the realizable characters, Bayonetta was number 1 and ended up becoming the final DLC character for Smash 3DS and Wii U.
However, during the October 5th, 2021 Sakurai presents, it was revealed the Sora was the winner of the ballot overall. However, due to licensing issues, Sora couldn’t make it into the Smash Bros. universe until now.
According to Sakurai, Sora’s addition in Smash required more effort and coordination than any other fighters. But it was all worth it, as one of the most highly requested characters is finally playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Sora in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Sora, unlike most of the other DLC fighters, is a lot simpler and easy to pick up and play. Despite being more straightforward with his gameplay, Sora is still quite distinctive and flashy to use.
Sora excels at airborne combat (his name means “sky,” after all). Also interesting to note is that Sakurai’s video game company is called Sora Co. Ltd.
His midair jump is high and he has high recovery distance. Sora is also floaty and light, which does make him easy to launch.
Sora’s attacks are derived from the original Kingdom Hearts game.
One of his unique treaits is his 3-hit combos when the attack button is held or pressed repeatedly. This 3-hit combo can be performed as a neutral attack, side-tilt attack, neutral air attack, and forward air attack.
As for his alternate costumes, he will have his outfit from Kingdom Hearts I, II, 3D [Dream Drop Distance], and III for the first four costumes. His pose for the artwork for them also differs.
The 5th costume variant is the Timeless River design, the 6th is Kingdom Hearts II’s Valor Form, his 7th is Kingdom Hearts II’s Wisdom Form, and his 8th is Kingdom Hearts II’s Ultimate Form design.
The stage that will be included with Sora is Hollow Bastion, a location from the Kingdom Hearts series.
Sora’s release date
Sora will be releasing on October 18th, 2021, just shy of 2 weeks after his reveal. Alongside Sora, there will be 3 Mii costumes alongside the update: an Octoling wig, a Judd hat, and Doom Slayer Mii Gunner outfit.
