Spider-Man players got a first look from Marvel itself at the amazing new suit added to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales…watch the full reveal below!
Justin K. Thompson, Production Designer on Into the Spider-Verse, had a lot to say about the character, Miles Morales, and what it meant bringing the character to life, “when we were working on the animated film, the most exciting part of the process was bringing Miles Morales to life on the big screen for the first time in a way that had never been seen before. We knew how special the character was and that we wanted to give him his own unique style of animation and it’s been amazing to see the way audiences have responded to the movie, and now it’s exciting to see that Insomniac Games and PlayStation, in collaboration with Marvel Games, created its own take on the character in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales coming out for PS5 and PS4. The way Insomniac faithfully brought the iconic suit designed for Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse into the game is visually stunning and remarkable. We were able to advise on some of the unique design elements that make the film so distinct, like how we often animated the characters on 2s and made recommendations on how best to pop up words and the little burst cards on screen into the action sequences.” The term “On 2s” is an animation term that relates to the number of frames an image stays on screen, so “on 2s” means an image will stay on screen for 2 frames. This creates the distinct animation style that Into the Spider-Verse is so well-known for. Insomniac has managed to incorporate this style into the animation of Miles’ character model and it really is stunning. He moves just as he does in the movie, and it looks incredible. The pop-ups on screen are also very reminiscent of comic book pop-ups and they fit in with the Spider-Verse aesthetic with the color palette and blurring effects seen in the movie.
As you can see, not only is there a classic comic book onomatopoeia with the “ZzAATTT” above the enemy’s head as Miles goes in for a devastating electric blow, but Miles’ “Spidey-Sense” is also different and has a very red shade. Miles also has the electric abilities that he uncovered in the film, along with what seems to be some new ones…maybe we’ll see those powers in the sequel? Either way, I’m excited to dive into Spider-Man: Miles Morales when it launches on November 12, 2020.
