In Spider-Man Miles Morales, Phin is one of the secondary characters Miles will meet throughout his adventures in Harlem. He may know who she is… But you might be asking “Who is Phin?” Here’s everything you need to know.
Please be warned, spoilers for the story lie ahead…
Phin Mason studied with Miles in High School and the two became best friends. From an early conversation, we also learn that the two built an award winning Energy Converter for a science convention. The two may have been distanced, through Miles’ enrollment at Brooklyn Visions Academy, but they remained good friends upon reuniting.
However, this isn’t even half of Phin’s story… Why she is a vital part of Spider-Man Miles Morales.
Phin is actually a member of The Underground, the mysterious organisation that use “programmable matter” technology to get results. In Spider-Man Miles Morales, you encounter The Underground early on and uncover their plans to disrupt and sabotage the NuForm Reactor built by Roxxon.
Roxxon’s NuForm Reactor may be an adequate source of energy for Harlem, but it was making people sick. Phin’s brother was killed because of his realisation and she vowed to stop Roxxon at all costs.
Miles Morales Knows Her As Phin… You May Also Know Her As Someone Else…
When Phin joined The Underground, they were a mish-mash group of wannabe revolutionaries without any real means of making an impact against the heavily armed Roxxon forces. She changed that, thanks to her designing and engineering of “Programmable Matter”.
These weapons allowed The Underground to make much more of an impact against the NYPD and anyone else who stood in their way. It also led to her adopting a new moniker…
In Earth-616, the main Comic Book Universe for Marvel Comics, Phineas Mason is the true identity of The Tinkerer. So… You can see the obvious link. Like any Earth-616 character, The Tinkerer has a long, complicated history that includes him brushing shoulders with almost every hero and villain on the roster.
Phineas Mason also appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although he is not directly using The Tinkerer alias… HE is doing the same job. He can be seen helping The Vulture make weapons from Chitauri, Dark Elf, and Ultron technology in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
We won’t go into any more detail on what happens to Phin Mason in Spider-Man Miles Morales, but you know that it’s going to be tough for him to take down his (possibly former) other Best Friend. Right?
