What to Feed Chickens
In Stardew Valley, baby and adult chickens can be feed with hay or grass. Hay can be purchased from Marnie for 50 gold each or harvest from grass if you have a silo.
How to Feed Chickens Grass
In the morning, if it’s not raining and it’s not winter, the animals will try to leave the coop through the small door. The door should be opened and there is no problem leaving it like that.
Outside, if there is grass available and accessible outside the coop, they will automatically eat it rather than hay. Also, they receive a mood boost when they eat grass.
But beware, not only they don’t leave the coop in the winter, but also there is also no grass available due to the snow.
How to Feed Chickens Hay
If they can’t leave the coop, you need to feed them with hay. Simply go inside the coop and place the hay in the feeding area. The feeding area is the bench-like thing on the upper right corner of the room.
If you build a silo, every hay you harvest from grass will go directly into it and then to the Hay Hooper inside your coop. Then, all you have to do is grab the hay inside the Hay Hooper and put it in the feeding area.
Upgrading your coop to the Deluxe Coop means that there’ll be an auto-feed system. With it, as long as you have hay inside the coop, you don’t need to manually grab the hay and place it in the feeding area.
You can leave the hay in the feeding area whenever you want to. If there is grass available, the animals will prefer to eat grass.
The same system is used with Barn animals.
Extra Tip for Hay in the Winter
Beware, winter is coming. Therefore, it means all the grass on your farm will die when autumn ends. So, with a scythe, cut all the grass on your farm on the last possible day of autumn so you can store as much hay as you can (and save money buying it from Marnie).
