Stray is a puzzle simulation game that had been announced all the way back in 2015. The concept is simple: as a cat, you explore a a cybercity full of humanoid robots, solving puzzles and helping inhabitants along the way. Developed by BlueSky Studios and published by Annapurna Interactive, the game is expected to release in 2022, originally 2021.
The game has a heavy focus on atmosphere and art. The city that the game takes place in was aesthetically influences by Kowloon Walled City. The gameplay experience was inspired by BlueTwelve Studio founders’ cats, Murtaugh and Riggs.
A new trailer showing more gameplay footage has been shown at the Annapurna Interactive Showcase stream, revealing lots of new gameplay details.
In Stray, you play as a cat who has fallen inside a mysterious and forgotten city. Separated from his family and injured, you will have to explore and survive in this unwelcoming environment. From the cat’s unique point of view, players must navigate their way through the dangers of this unfriendly place, and use the cat’s skills to solve puzzles and uncover mysteries along the way.
The trailer shows what some of the puzzles are like, melding together with the environment. In a clip, we see the cat pick up a buck among the litter of the streets to toss into a fan. The fan becomes jammed, allowing the cat to pass through it.
There are also interactive elements in the game to help with the immersion, such as drinking from a container in the house that is being used to collect a leak in the roof.
A companion in Stray
Along the way, you will meet a small drone named “B-12.” With the drone, you can interact with objects in the world you otherwise couldn’t as a cat.
The drone will also help you communicate with the inhabitants of the city. Together, they will work together to learn more about the secrets of this forgotten community of humanoid machines.
Throughout the game, there are many quirks and interactions you can perform, fitting for a cat. For example, you can scratch on the sofa, like any other cat would.
Approaching the citizens will also have them reacting to you, such as admiring the cute cat.
You will find enemies along the way, which must be evaded. These enemies will latch onto the cat, which can be shaken off with a button press.
Later on, these same enemies can be dealt with by using a gadget given to you by a scientist. The gadget will help you defend yourself against them.
The game was originally planned for release on 2021, but has since been delayed to 2022. Stray will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Steam.
