System Override, Apex Legends’ Newest Event, Starts Today

Updated:

Alright, Legends. It’s time to jump back into World’s Edge with Apex. System Override, the next limited-time event, is coming to Respawn’s battle royale shooter on March 3.

Wait, haven’t you been here before?

Taking point this event, aside from the cosmetics, is Deja Loot. Deja Loot is a limited-time mode where all the loot spawns stay exactly the same all day. Not only this, but the circle location AND dropship path are both gonna be the same. Finding good loot is one thing, but as the day goes on, getting to it will be harder and harder. You can already tell this is going to make the final ring pure chaos. I am here for it.

Week one of the Deja Loot event will take place in World’s Edge, while week two takes us back to the glorious King’s Canyon. If only they could take the PUBG route and let you play both at the same time… COUGH COUGH RESPAWN.

The theory of Evo(Shield)lution

Alongside this, Apex Legends is introducing an Evo Shield into the equipment mix. This works like any ordinary shield, but with the “evo” bit. Essentially, as you do damage throughout the match, the shield gets upgraded. It starts out weaker than weak, with one shield bar, but can be upgraded all the way up to the elusive purple shield and then into the new RED TIER.

It should be noted that Red Tier shields are one section bigger than the gold shields, so that’s the reason why you’d put up with an Evo Shield. It’s one of those classic high risk, high reward scenarios.

Time to Override your threads!

Fear not, fashionistas! It wouldn’t be a limited-time event without difficult-to-procure limited-time cosmetics. System Override is no different.

The big news here is that Octane is the next Apex Legend to receive the heirloom treatment! He joins Wraith, Bloodhound, Lifeline, and Pathfinder by getting an ultra-rare melee weapon. Octane’s melee weapon of choice is a custom butterfly knife. These also come with a banner pose relevant to the heirloom and a kill quip, not to mention a cool in-game animation for when you have it equipped.

Respawn has actually changed the way this works, but it doesn’t mean less work. Rather than just earning the Heirloom Set all at once, you unlock it via a progression of Heirloom Shard drops. That means you can still get it after the event ends, and it’s a little easier to work towards over a longer period. It’s a small mercy, I suppose.

The event tracker, introduced through Grand Soiree, allows you to effectively see what you have unlocked and what else you can. Pictured below, you can see that the best cosmetic available through the event challenges is the Revenant skin. (This is apparently the whole event tracker, which… It is a bit depressing, but I guess it wouldn’t be an EA game without charging you through the nose for anything, would it? Can you tell that I dislike the limited-time loot system in Apex? How the event loot boxes cost you SO much more than the regular loot boxes? Or how there is no way to earn them through gameplay, compared to something like Overwatch? Maybe how you literally have to buy TWENTY FOUR limited-event loot boxes if you want to unlock Octane’s Heirloom? Yeah, it really makes these events a lot of fun when you’re not rich.)

Other limited-time cosmetics will be available to purchase with those lovely (and creatively named) apex coins. The trailer below gives you a great look at some of the things that are available.

Meta Updates, and More…

The System Override update also brings a whole host of changes to the game through a larger update.

There are a few meta changes that people should be aware of. If you’re a Gibraltar main, I have some bad news, brudda. His Gun Shield health is being taken down a third, now sitting at a measly 50. Other than that, though, it’s all good. Crypto’s weapon now reloads automatically when he enters his drone view. Bloodhound’s Eye of the Allfather takes a little longer to activate but lasts a second longer and scans at a tripled distance. Also, the base inventory number is being increased by two and backpacks are being updated to accommodate. That means you can carry FOUR EXTRA FRAGS, BITCHES!

Obviously, this isn’t all. There are a few more tweaks and bug-fixing updates being made. Gamespot have taken down the rest of the Patch Notes, so you can check them out here!

System Override will be available later today, March 3, to download and get stuck into. Don’t forget, if you play on PlayStation, you can also grab both Shadow of the Colossus and Sonic Forces for free starting today.

(Okay, yes. I’m guilty… I borrowed a lot of these images and clips from EA’s official post on System Override. So, here’s the credit and a link to that if you think I missed anything.)
