The time has once again come for Switch users to pick up their joy-cons and slam tetrominos together to end the game of other users. The 20th Tetris 99 Maximus Cup will begin at 11 p. PT today Thursday, March 4th, 2021, and will only stick around until 10:59 pm PT on Monday, March 8th, 2021.
In this 4-day long tournament, players will be stacking blocks and clearing lines quickly in pursuit of winning a new in-game theme that is centered around the recent release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury on Switch.
To unlock the skin for use outside of the tournament, players will need to accrue 100 event points. Event points can be gained via playing Tetris 99 matches- win or lose. The amount of event points gained depends on the participants placement during the match. Leaving a match early will not gain the player any event points.
Here’s a bulleted list that shows all the possible point outcomes:
- 1st: 100 points
- 2nd: 50 points
- 3rd: 30 points
- 4th-10th: 20 points
- 11th-30th: 15 points
- 31st-50th: 10 points
- 51st-90th: 5 points
- 91st+: 1 point
If players gain 100 event points during the competition, they will be entered into a drawing for 999 Nintendo Gold points (equivalent $9.99). 999 players will be lucky enough to receive this gift added to their Nintendo account’s balance. If players choose to, they can play for more points and earn more tickets (100 points per ticket).
If you’re trying your hardest to save a little bit of money on your next game purchase and love the quick, yet methodical gameplay of Tetris 99, give this tournament a chance! Remember, win or lose, you still have the opportunity to gain $10 in E-shop credit!
