The Last Of Us Part 2, which released on Friday to huge critical acclaim, has officially been banned in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia for its homosexual content between the characters Ellie & Dina.
A user on Reddit discovered the game isn’t on the Playstation Store and contacted Sony about it, and it was confirmed that the game is banned.
One of the Emirati users of the PS4 on the Reddit platform, noting that the Last of Us Part 2 game does not exist on the UAE PlayStation Store, contacted the store support and their response was that if the game is not available in the local store, it has been banned by the authorities and the company cannot do anything about that.
According to report by MSN;
Twitter users noted that the sexual content of Sony’s game, according to the ESRB rating, could be the main reason the game hasn’t been approved in the two Gulf countries that are known for having very conservative traditions.
Additionally, users who searched for information about the game trying to figure out the reason why it may have been banned in their countries, learned that the game includes a same-sex relationship between two women, which could explain the ban.
Homosexual activity and relationships are still illegal in many countries in the Middle East, with punishments ranging from imprisonment to death, so it does make sense that the game was banned because of it. Sometimes, games are censored in certain countries; Nazi imagery is completely removed in German versions of Wolfenstein games. But it looks like Sony didn’t attempt to have the game censored so it could be sold.
Players in the region will have options to play, though. tTey can use an account registered outside of the region, such as the US, to purchase the game, or they could import it from another country. But it still sucks that gamers will have to go through extra loopholes to play the game.
The Last Of Us Part 2 is out now exclusively on Playstation 4.
