Valorant Patch 1.01 Released

The first Valorant patch since release came out on Tuesday. Patch 1.01 details a Sage nerf, a new spike rush update, tweaks to maps and some performance updates.

Sage, the healing sentinel, has been the target of nerfs since release in closed beta. Her Barrier Orb wall’s cast range is reduced from 20 to 10 meters. This is a significant change, as Sage players have to get much closer to crucial chokepoints to place a wall.

“As a Sentinel, Sage is supposed to be most effective when defending territory that she already controls,” the patch notes said. “The 20m cast range was allowing Sage to aggressively take control of neutral territory in a way that was inappropriate for her role in Valorant. This range reduction aims to keep her strong while defending territory but reduce her efficacy at taking ground.”

I do applaud the transparency from Riot here. Being open and honest and vocalizing players’ frustrations is important for a healthy competitive game. Sage has been butchered a little more, and her wall is substantially downgraded. She will still be a must-pick for Valorant competitive teams, though.

Map Updates

As for map updates, bugs where weapons fell through the world and walls weren’t penetrable on Ascent have been patched. What really made me happy was seeing on all maps “modified several call out names to better match player terms.” With so much jargon coming from CS:GO, it is nice to see Riot trying to create uniform call outs.

Spike Rush

The new quick Valorant game mode is seeing new types of orbs for players to pick up. The Health Orb grants instant teamwide health regeneration. The Deception Orb “applies ‘Paranoia’ to the enemy team 3 seconds after capture.”

What looks really fun is the Golden Gun orb. The player who captures it gets a one-shot, one-kill weapon that is perfectly accurate, the agent moves at knife speed and kills grant an additional round. The catch? Players only have one bullet in the chamber and two backup rounds.

These all seem like fun additions to the chaotic game mode. I do wonder if any new game modes are coming to a future Valorant patch.
