Which map should GTA 6 bring back?

Many fans want to know what Rockstar Games are planning for the GTA 6 map. The series has always done well when it comes to their larger-than-life open world maps. In Grand Theft Auto, we’ve seen sprawling metropolises based on Los Angeles and New York City, plus a huge western-style map in their Red Dead franchise.

When it comes to new instalments, one of the first things fans want to know is where is the game going to be set? In the past, America has been a common location. In fact, GTA has only ventured out of the States a handful of times, in the first game and in GTA Online for one of the heists.

So, what map should GTA 6 have and should they bring back an old map?

Old Cities

Los Santos has been used in the series twice already, in GTA: San Andreas and in GTA V. It would be a huge disappointment to see the map return so soon, especially after the ongoing success of GTA Online.  However, it may be worth utilizing other areas of the GTA: San Andreas map. CJ visited the fictionalized San Francisco in San Fierro, and Las Vegas in Las Venturas.

With the popularity of casinos in GTA Online, returning to Las Venturas could be a smart move for the series. In San Andreas, the map was pretty uninhabited, with a small strip and a large but empty desert. Rockstar could expand on that, making a lifelike Vegas and having surrounding areas such as the Grand Canyon and Death Valley.

A fictionalized New York City, called Liberty City, is the home in GTA IV. However, GTA IV has seemed to have been forgotten recently and fans are more than happy to revisit the ‘big apple’.

GTA III, San Andreas, and Vice City were recently remastered in the GTA Trilogy, moving the older titles to newer generations. Yet, GTA IV hasn’t been given the same treatment and was only released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows.

Should Liberty City make an appearance in GTA 6, I’d expect it to be more of a cameo for a few missions than the main map of the area. Like the cameo Liberty City made in the San Andreas mission ‘Saint Mark’s Bistro’.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if GTA goes somewhere new and I’m sure the fans would like to see a brand-new map for GTA 6.

An American city that has been brought up often is Chicago. The Midwestern city is one of the largest in the states, giving the developers plenty of areas to play with.

We’ve already seen Chicago in Watch Dogs, Need for Speed, and TimeSplitters 2 so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Rockstar takes inspiration from those games and make another gritty map, like Liberty City.

‘Project Americas’ has been mentioned a few times in the rumor mill about the next installment. The idea would see Vice City brought back but also another map set in South America. The game would be set in the 80s and the story would be heavily influenced by the drug cartel boom of the decade.

The two destinations would be fitting for this sort of storyline and allow fans to return to a new version of Vice City, a beloved map amongst fanatic GTA fans.

If this idea does go ahead, the main area of South America would be a fictionalized version of Rio de Janeiro, giving players the joy of visiting Christ the Redeemer and the Copacabana.

Going West

GTA has been predominately set in the Americas, so is it time that Rockstar ventures West? They have already been to London in an expansion pack for the first installment, but the map was nowhere near as fleshed out compared to the recent GTA V.

In fact, the game was top-down, nothing compared to the sprawling maps we’ve seen of recent. London would be a good option for GTA to return, but they’ll need to look at other franchises to make sure they succeed.

Watch Dogs: Legion brought the series to a futurist London and as great and lifelike the map was, the game wasn’t a massive hit. I wonder what GTA could do with the English capital to make it a success.

Rockstar hasn’t even stepped foot in Asia, but fans are crying out for a Japanese map. It would make sense for the series to head to Tokyo. We’ve seen the Yakuza in multiple games so why not expand on their stories and make Tokyo the main map. The neon light streets and karaoke with your friends would make for one fun map.

Rockstar has even trademarked GTA: Tokyo in the past so they could return to an old idea.
