Former indie developer miHoYo has recently released the latest gaming craze “Genshin Impact” to overwhelmingly positive results. So whoexactly is Genshin Impact developer miHoYo?
Who is miHoYo?
“Tech Otakus Save the World’ miHoYo was founded in 2012 by three Shanghai Jiaotong University graduate students who shared a passion for technology and ACG (anime, comics, and games) culture. These otakus formed what has become not just a game company, but an original IP creator with its own anime, manga, light novels, music, and more that expand upon the engaging world and stories of games. Besides producing ACG content, miHoYo also is a tech-driven company, even developing its own proprietary rendering technology. This combination of technical prowess and unique IP has led miHoYo to find success both in China and around the globe. The miHoYo team strives every day to create ‘something new, something out of this world, something out of imagination…'”
miHoYo started as an indie developer in 2011 when they published FlyMe2theMoon, a “simple but unique” ‘slide to play one button control’ anime-themed fantasy action flying game. It was released for free on the Apple App Store on September 28, 2011 and currently has an average 4.8 star rating.
After the successful launch of FlyMe2theMoon, miHoYo was officially founded and registered as a company in 2012 and has since released mobile games Zombiegal Kawaii (2012), Guns GirlZ (2014), and Honkai Impact 3rd (2016). Players praised Honkai Impact 3rd for its “exceptional graphics and depth of gameplay” and ranked #1 on the App Store in China in August 2018. Honkai Impact 3rd would eventually see a PC version internationally at the end of 2019.
In 2019, however, miHoYo would hold its first beta test for what would eventually become the 2020 craze Genshin Impact, an epic fantasy adventure in which players choose a character and are taken along a journey in search of a stolen sibling.
In 2020, miHoYo released another mobile game titled Tears of Themis, an otome game with puzzle elements.
“You are a lawyer who just graduated from university. Your task is to solve different cases and help your clients. There are four attractive men around you and you slowly fall in love with one of them while investigating different mysteries. There are different endings depending on your choices throughout the whole story.”
Tears of Themis currently has a 4.5 star rating on QooApp, as there is no English version of the app. 2020 also saw miHoYo launch the cross-platform Genshin Impact and skyrocketing the developer’s popularity with many people comparing the game to Nintendo’sLegend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
