Last week, we got the surprise announcement that Fortnite would be releasing their Icon series and Ninja would be the first person to receive his own skin as part of the series. This series will also include the previously released Marshmello and Major Lazer skins and will be where Fortnite pays tribute and celebrates popular icons in the world of music, games, fashion, etc as well as its top creators and influencers. Since then, Pokimane and Jordan Fisher have both had emotes released based on their own dances.
But many people have been asking why Epic have waited until now to release these skins and not when the game was at its peak, which would have brought in a lot more revenue for Epic. This does make sense considering during 2018 Ninja was averaging 100,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch, compared to the approximately 17-20,000 he gets today on Mixer. Also, the game is nowhere near as popular as it was during Season 3-5. In fact, it is around its lowest point now as interest has disappeared because of bad seasons such as Season X with the B.R.U.T.Es and the 2-month extension of the current season.
This could be the reason why the Icon Series has finally materialized. When Fortnite was at its peak, it didn’t need the extra boost because the hype train was well and truly rolling along the tracks. Now the train is slowing down after losing favor among fans and content creators who are moving on to different games, with games such as Minecraft regaining popularity and Escape From Tarkov proving very popular at the minute. This means that Fortnite is not getting the viewership on both YouTube and Twitch that it once did. In today’s day and age, a game lives and dies by its content creators. With so many amazing games being released on an almost weekly basis, it is very easy for a game to be out of sight and out of mind, so it is crucial to keep content creators engaged to keep promoting the game. So now is the perfect time for the Icon Series to be released because this gives content creators a huge reason to continue playing their games and also allows their fans to become more invested in not only the game but the creator themselves. People can now play Fortnite as, the face of Fortnite, Ninja, this is something a lot of fans will want to do and it also gives Ninja a huge incentive to play the game as he is actually in the game itself as a playable character.
Whether the Icon Series has any impact on bringing players back remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see which creators are added next. We’ve already seen Ninja, Pokimane and Jordan Fisher in a matter of days and Loserfruit & Grefg will be the next creators to get either skins or emotes made for them.
I think its a great idea and grabbed the Ninja skin set as well as the Poki emote and will be buying other items from creators I enjoy, so I guess it is doing its job.
What do you think of the Fortnite Icon Series? Have you bought any of the items yet? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
