Why Resident Evil 8 Isn’t Cross-Gen

The Resident Evil 8 trailer from the PS5 event was one of the biggest highlights. But many fans were disappointed to later find out that it will only be available for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X and PC, no PS4 or Xbox One versions will be released.

Horror game insider, Dusk Golem, took to Twitter explaining why Resident Evil 8 won’t be coming to PS4 or Xbox One. Dusk said, “I got some clarification on why they made RE8 next-gen only, when it was cross-gen previously. With the updated graphic fidelity overhaul they’re doing (still in progress), the way RE8 was designed lead to past-gen consoles having a lot of pop-in/long texture loads.”

This would make sense as on current-gen hardware the game would have to be downgraded graphically, or at least not utilize the full potential of the PS5/Xbox Series X hardware.

He then continued, “Because there’s a bigger focus on exploration this would lead to the last-gen console versions having notable issues. So they decided to drop the last-gen versions of the game to make it so the game had no loading at all (not limited by last gen hardware) and push the graphic overhaul further without the limitations of last-gen tech in mind.”

This is great news to players intending on buying either console. They know that Capcom are going all out on this game and didn’t want to sacrifice any quality because of limitation from last-gen hardware. But unfortunately it means that players not looking to upgrade so soon will have to miss out, or hand over the cash for a shiny next-gen console just to play it.

Are you planning on getting a PS5/Xbox Series X to play Resident Evil 8? Let us know in the comments. I actually bought my Xbox 360 just to play Resident Evil 5.
