WWE 2K Battlegrounds Announced, WWE 2K21 Officially Cancelled

2K has just announced a new over-the-top arcade-style WWE game called WWE 2K Battlegrounds while addressing the future of the WWE 2K simulation series of games after the upcoming WWE 2K21 was cancelled. It’s also very widely documented that WWE 2K20 was an absolute mess, and it seems its time to go back to the drawing board with the series.

This isn’t WWE’s first time releasing an arcade-style WWE game. In addition to the actual arcade games released during the 80s and 90s, WWE has released WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game, on both console and arcade, WWF In Your House, and most recently, WWE All Stars.

The game is being developed by Saber Interactive, the studio who also created the NBA 2K Playgrounds series & World War Z. They have also worked on many ports such as the Halo Master Chief Collection and The Witcher 3 Nintendo Switch port.

In the statement, 2K said this about the new 2K Battlegrounds game;

We’re thrilled to introduce you to WWE 2K Battlegrounds, a completely new WWE gaming experience that will feature arcade-style action and over-the-top Superstar designs, environments and moves. We’re focusing on social pick-up-and-play fun, but with plenty of depth for those who want to get way into it.

The game is scheduled for release in Fall 2020. WWE 2K games tend to be released around October-November, so we expect the game to be released at a similar time to other titles.

2K also addressed WWE 2K20, which has seen many problems with glitches and broken mechanics;

Next, we want to address WWE 2K20. We’ve heard and appreciate your feedback, and continue to listen to you closely. Since launch, we’ve released five title updates, addressing hundreds of reported concerns, and have released four WWE 2K20 Originals DLC expansions to build on and improve the experience. We’ve also heard your requests to keep the WWE 2K19 servers running; they will remain active for the time being.

All of that being said, we hear you and we know you want more from the franchise, so here’s what we’re going to do: we are applying what we’ve learned to the next WWE 2K simulation game with a renewed focus on quality and fun. As part of that commitment, we are extending the production timeline and will not be releasing a WWE 2K simulation game in 2020 (T2 fiscal year 2021). We want to ensure the development team at Visual Concepts can create a great game that will entertain grizzled WWE 2K veterans, as well as newcomers who want to climb through the ropes and step into the ring for the very first time.

It looks like 2K is going back to the drawing board and waiting until 2021 to release their next game, hopefully addressing a lot of the issues, as well as hopefully making the game less stale. I am a huge WWE fan and actively collect all the games and WWE 2K20 was the first WWE title in a long time that I skipped.
