The upcoming Xbox Series X could be priced at $400, according to industry analyst Michael Pachter.
Speaking to Geoff Keighley on Periscope, Michael laid out his thoughts as to why he thinks the Xbox Series X will be priced at $400 rather than the expected $500, the main reason being that Microsoft are desperate to beat Sony in this next console war. The Xbox One has only sold a fraction of what the PS4 has sold, with the Xbox One selling approximately 46 million units whereas the PS5 has sold approximately 107 million.
Michael predicts that Microsoft will shave $100 off the launch price while Sony will need to sell theirs at $500. Microsoft makes a lot of money elsewhere, outside of console sales, so they could take a hit on the first 10 million or so units to get ahead in the race.
“From what I’ve seen, Sony’s going to have to charge $500 for their PS5, and Microsoft has a big balance sheet, if they want to cut the price by $100, just price below and subsidize the first ten million, they will.”
Microsoft has been playing very smart with the Xbox Series X so far. They were the first to reveal the console, what it looked like, the specs (which is more powerful than the PS5), and gameplay footage. It seems that Xbox is going all out this generation to try and claim that top prize.
